Even though residents have not been paying the bills, arrears are never added to the total amount. However, they fear that Huda may suddenly decide to collect the dues, which could run into lakhs.
Vinod Jain, secretary of Bankey Bihari Society, alleged that the water department has several times threatened to cancel their connection for not paying the bills.
“We have served notices to Huda for bill payment of Rs 5 crore. I have verbally communicated with XEN rank officer to clear dues. I have been informed that Huda Gurugram is facing fund crisis and hence sought to head office Panchkula for arrangement of funds,” said Navin Verma, superintending engineer of Gurugram range.
Basai water-treatment plant is the biggest in the city, having capacity of 60 million gallon daily (MGD) drinking water. It supplies water from pump boosting stations at sector 16 and 5 to people living in DLF city, south city, old city Palam Vihar among others.
From Rs.1.25 per kilolitre in the lowest slab, the lowest rate now will be Rs.5 per KL. The commercial and industrial water tariff has been fixed at Rs.15 per KL against the current rate of Rs.4 KL. A KL is 1,000 litres.
The water tariff was not revised since 2001 and the cost to supply water is around 70 crore whereas the department just has Rs.15 crore. By hiking the rates the department will be able to collect around Rs.300 crore. Besides the water expenditure the rest remaining amount is spent on the maintenance of boosting stations, tubewells and water works.
The discount would be admissible from April 1, 2017 for one year, an official release said.
In case of domestic unmetered supply, Rs 40 per connection per month would be charged for general category other than Scheduled Castes households and Rs 20 per connection per month for Scheduled Castes households.
