Shows Gone Wild: Green Day Gets Dirty At Woodstock ’94

Shows Gone Wild is our look at the craziest and wildest events that have occurred at shows throughout live music history, captured on video.

Their album Dookie had come out just months before and their two breakout singles earned Green Day tons of buzz and major airplay on MTV. But their performance at Woodstock ’94 turned out to be a different story. The three-day festival turned into a mudpit on the first day, turning everyone and everywhere brown, which paved the way for Green Day’s set on the third day. The performance turned dirty (literally) when the audience started hurling mud onstage. During their final song, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong happily retaliated, waging an all-out mudfight between the band and the audience, spawning one of the most notable moments in the history of punk rock as well as earning the name “Mudstock ’94.”
